Tata Zoological Park in Jamshedpur has rolled out special winter arrangements to safeguard its animals

As temperatures dip across the country, zoos are stepping up efforts to protect animals from the winter chill. The Tata Zoological Park in the steel city of Jamshedpur is no exception, with special arrangements in place to ensure the comfort and well-being of its residents.
Carnivorous animals such as lions, tigers, hyenas and leopards have been provided with room heaters to keep them warm during the night. Their food intake has also been increased to help them maintain energy levels in the cold weather.
Herbivores, too, are receiving extra care. Zoo authorities have installed halogen lamps and high-voltage bulbs in their enclosures, along with temporary wind barriers to shield them from cold winds. Additional food supplements are being given to help them cope with the low temperatures.
According to the director of Tata Zoological Park, Naeem Akhtar, "We have made several arrangements – there are different arrangements for herbivorous and carnivorous animals. For carnivorous animals – tigers, lions, hyenas and leopards, we have installed room heaters, which operate during the night. Sufficient heaters have been placed to ensure adequate warmth. Apart from this we have temporarily suspended their weekly fast, so that they get adequate food and energy to cope with the cold. For herbivorous animals we have installed halogen lamps and high-voltage bulbs, along with temporary wind barriers to protect them from chilly winds. Their feed quantity has also been increased – and we are giving them jaggery, minerals and vitamins to help protect them from the cold."
As per the reports from zoo officials these arrangements are part of standard operating procedures followed every winter, with additional attention being given this season to ensure that all animals remain safe, warm and comfortable.
