Nuclear Energy Institute CEO Maria Korsnick says India’s engineering expertise and robust supply chains make it an ideal partner for the United States

India is well-positioned to become a major partner for the United States in the civil nuclear sector, according to Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) President and CEO Maria Korsnick. She said India's strong supply chains, engineering expertise and experience in nuclear technology make it a natural collaborator as both countries pursue ambitious plans to expand their nuclear power capacity over the coming decades.
Korsnick highlighted Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) as a key area for future cooperation, noting that India's manufacturing capabilities could complement US innovation in advanced nuclear technologies. She also welcomed India's proposed SHANTI Act, saying it could address long-standing liability concerns that have slowed India-US civil nuclear cooperation since the landmark 2005 nuclear agreement.
Emphasising the need for effective implementation, Korsnick called for closer coordination between governments and industry stakeholders in both countries. She said stronger collaboration could help accelerate nuclear energy projects, support clean energy goals and strengthen long-term energy security for both India and the United States.
