One of Kerala’s largest eviction drives is underway at Poopara, where the district administration has begun demolishing 88 buildings built on encroached land along the banks of the Panniyar river in Idukki. Acting on directions of the Kerala High Court, officials launched the operation under tight security, with around 200 police personnel deployed and prohibitory orders in force under the Santhanpara police station limits.

The structures, identified after prolonged litigation over alleged revenue land encroachment, belong to 56 individuals and include both residential homes and commercial buildings. Authorities had earlier prepared a list of illegal constructions and taken possession following court directions. Although owners moved the Supreme Court, their petitions were dismissed, clearing the way for eviction.

Demolition began with commercial structures using earthmovers, with remaining buildings to be razed in phases over the coming days. Officials said 33 houses are among the buildings marked for removal, while rehabilitation arrangements, including rented accommodation, have been made for 15 affected families.
