From psychological thrillers and horror films to romantic comedies and crime dramas, streaming platforms have a diverse line-up of releases this week. Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, JioHotstar, SonyLIV, Apple TV and Lionsgate Play are bringing new titles to their libraries, alongside films and series in Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil and other languages. Here is a look at the OTT releases to watch from October 8 to October 16.

Eyes

Starring Kani Kusruti as police officer Tina Sebastian, ‘Eyes’ follows an investigation into stalking cases involving women. As Tina examines the incidents, she attempts to understand the psychological factors behind obsessive behaviour and the circumstances that lead to threats and violations of personal boundaries. Directed by Manu Ashokan, the thriller premiered on SonyLIV on October 9.

Matchbox The Movie

Inspired by Mattel’s iconic toy cars, ‘Matchbox The Movie’ brings high-speed action and comedy to the screen. Directed by Sam Hargrave, the live-action film stars John Cena, alongside Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Arturo Castro, Teyonah Parris, Corey Stoll, Bill Camp, Danai Gurira and Golshifteh Farahani. The action adventure arrived on Apple TV on October 9.

Above & Below

A holiday in Mexico takes a dangerous turn for five friends in this horror-action thriller. Their discovery of cocaine hidden underwater draws them into a deadly confrontation with a cartel boss, who forces Tatiana and Kaley into a shark cage to recover the drugs. With limited oxygen, armed criminals and great white sharks threatening their survival, the group must fight to escape. ‘Above & Below’ began streaming on Lionsgate Play on October 9.

Pradhama Drishtiya Kuttakkar

Parvathy Thiruvothu plays Aleena Abraham, a newly recruited police officer and mother whose life becomes complicated following a fatal incident at her station. As investigator Harris Meeran looks into the case, the evidence raises suspicions of a possible cover-up. What follows is a psychological battle between the two, with each new revelation challenging their understanding of the incident. The crime thriller, which has drawn comparisons with the ‘Drishyam’ franchise, premiered on Netflix on October 9.

Epic – First Semester

Anand Deverakonda and Vaishnavi Chaitanya headline this Telugu romantic comedy about love, ambition and life abroad. Anand plays Aditya, an aspiring filmmaker who moves to London for his master’s degree and meets Kadali, played by Vaishnavi. The two agree to a nine-month arrangement, but their growing feelings complicate their individual plans and expectations. ‘Epic – First Semester’ began streaming on Netflix on October 9.

Khalifa: The Ruler

Prithviraj Sukumaran plays Aamir Ali, a textile shop owner whose ordinary life takes an unexpected turn when a gold-trading case involving his father prompts him to investigate his family history. His search leads him to the legacy of his estranged grandfather and a world shaped by wealth, power and rivalries. Directed by Vysakh, the film is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video from October 9, following a theatrical reception that fell short of expectations.

Awarapan 2

Emraan Hashmi reprises his role as Shivam Pandit in Vishesh Bhatt’s sequel to ‘Awarapan’. Featuring Disha Patani, Shabana Azmi, Puran Gabbi, Vijayant Kohli and Suvinder Vicky, the film follows Shivam as he returns to the criminal underworld and confronts choices involving redemption, love and sacrifice. As rivalries intensify and relationships are tested, his decisions shape the course of his life. ‘Awarapan 2’ is available on Amazon Prime Video in India and across 240 countries and territories from October 9.

Mandaadi

Set against the backdrop of competitive boat racing, ‘Mandaadi’ centres on Maari, a young racer determined to revive his village’s struggling team. His efforts bring him into conflict with Sattapuli and his powerful crew, while a threat to Maari’s life draws his uncle Kaali, a former champion, back into the sport. As the team faces sabotage and buried family secrets come to light, Kaali must help the fishermen prepare for a decisive race. ‘Mandaadi’ arrived on Netflix on October 8.

Treasure Island

This adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic adventure follows Jim Hawkins and his mother, Bess, after they discover a map leading to Captain Flint’s legendary treasure. Their find sets off a perilous quest aboard the Hispaniola, where shifting allegiances and greed threaten the lives of those on board. The film stars Hayley Atwell, David Oyelowo, Jack Huston and Tomer Capone and is set to stream on Amazon Prime Video on October 11.

Disclosure Day

Emily Blunt and Josh O’Connor lead this science-fiction film as Margaret Fairchild, a television meteorologist, and Dr Daniel Kellner, a cybersecurity expert, respectively. The pair become entangled in an investigation into a secret government operation involving extraterrestrial life. As they uncover evidence that could challenge humanity’s understanding of its place in the universe, they must confront questions about the concealment of such information and the consequences of making it public. ‘Disclosure Day’ is scheduled to arrive on JioHotstar on October 12.

The Trap

Netflix’s German psychological thriller ‘The Trap’ follows Lisa Konrad, played by Friederike Becht, a reclusive author who has spent a decade away from the outside world. She eventually leaves her home with a plan to draw out the person responsible for her sister’s murder, using herself as bait. The six-part limited series explores her attempt to confront the killer and is set to premiere on Netflix on October 13.

Kappi Squad

‘Kappi Squad’ follows four young adults who channel their insecurities, egos and wounded pride into an unexpected business venture: running a cafe. Their efforts to turn the enterprise into something successful form the basis of the series, which explores ambition, relationships and the challenges of working together. The ensemble cast includes Rinosh George, Anagha Ajith, Diya Deepan, Joel Joseph and Abhirami Dayanandan. The series is scheduled to release on JioHotstar on October 15.

Evil Dead Burn

The latest instalment in the ‘Evil Dead’ franchise begins with a woman grieving the loss of her husband who seeks comfort at his family’s secluded home. What should have been a gathering for support soon descends into horror when family members become Deadites, unleashing a wave of violence and chaos. The film promises the franchise’s familiar mix of supernatural terror and graphic horror, with its premise described as a family reunion from hell. ‘Evil Dead Burn’ is set to stream on Netflix on October 16.
