Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Women's Commission proposes an Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) at the shooting locations of television serials to address issues faced by women.

Moreover, the Commission noted that it is the responsibility of the producers as well as the broadcasters to provide security to female actors at the filming location. It also directed the state government to monitor the industry. The Internal Complaints Committees should also operate throughout the entire filming period.

Earlier, some actresses lodged a complaint alleging security issues at their shooting locations. The lapses made by the filmmakers were apparent when the Commission visited the filming locations without prior notice.

Later, a study prepared by Commission Chairperson P. Sathidevi, after examining the plights of women in various fields, including television, was handed over to the government.

The key recommendations are:

  • The Committee, headed by a senior female figure, should work for women's safety and prevent sexual harassment in the workplace by including representatives of legal experts, producers, workers, etc.
  • Better infrastructure, including separate toilets, should be provided.
  • Labour laws should be enforced for those in the television industry as well.
  • Ensure equal pay and equality between male and female actors.
  • Counselling should be provided to female actors as the rate of suicides has risen.
  • Transport facilities should be provided to reach the shooting locations and accommodations safely. Safety should be ensured when travelling at night.
