The long-awaited release of ‘Jana Nayagan’, led by Tamil star and newly elected Chief Minister Vijay, has been held up far longer than fans expected. As anticipation intensifies, producer Venkat K Narayana of KVN Productions has offered a detailed account of the obstacles that pushed the film beyond its original schedule.

Speaking to NDTV, Narayana said the team has been ready to release the film for months but has been forced to wait for final approval from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The delay, he explained, stemmed from an unexpected complaint raised after the film had already cleared its initial certification screening.

The producer also acknowledged that Vijay’s dramatic political rise has added heightened public interest, and even unforeseen pressure, around the film’s timing, making the delay all the more closely watched.

Certification setback

According to Narayana, the makers submitted ‘Jana Nayagan’ to the CBFC in December 2025. The examining committee viewed the film and conveyed that it would receive a U/A 16+ certificate. But just as the team expected the paperwork to arrive, the process abruptly stalled.

Instead of receiving the certificate, the producers were informed by email that a complaint had been filed against the film, forcing the board to pause the certification and escalate the matter to the revision committee.

Narayana said the development came as a surprise, especially because the film had not been released publicly. The team subsequently approached the court, arguing that no external complaint could be justified at this stage. The legal proceedings revealed that the objection had come from an examining committee member who had earlier agreed to clear the film, a twist that placed the project on a more protracted certification route.

Following the court’s clarification, the production house promptly submitted the film to the revision committee. Narayana noted that all formalities have since been followed strictly, and the team continues to wait for the final certificate needed to take the film to cinemas.

He described the situation as both frustrating and unusual, explaining that precedence suggests public complaints should not interfere with CBFC decisions, yet an internal objection had significantly changed the course of the film’s release timeline.

Narayana also reflected on how Vijay’s political career has reshaped audience expectations. With the actor sworn in as Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister this week, the producer said fans have urged the team to alter the title card from “Thalapathy Vijay” to “Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu”.

Producer says final stages are close

At an event held during the oath-taking ceremony, Narayana said the certification is now in its concluding stage. Discussions with the CBFC are ongoing, and he expressed optimism that the film could release within approximately two weeks. ‘Jana Nayagan’ had already missed its initial 9 January release date due to the extended review process.

Despite the setbacks, Narayana stressed that the team’s focus is solely on delivering the film to audiences as soon as the formalities conclude.

Leak scare and piracy crackdown

The production also suffered a blow when the film was leaked online. Police arrested a freelance assistant editor and several others believed to be involved, raising renewed concerns within the industry over digital piracy. Narayana described past issues surrounding the project as “unfortunate”, but said the team has pushed ahead despite the challenges.
