Mumbai: Following a flurry of public requests, filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri changed the title of his political drama, The Delhi Files: The Bengal Chapter, to The Bengal Files: Right To Life.
This is Agnihotri's third picture in the highly contested Files trilogy and explores the terrible intercommunal violence that occurred in undivided Bengal in the 1940s.
On Tuesday, Agnihotri took to X to share the update. Sharing a poster of the film, he wrote, “BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: The Delhi Files is now The Bengal Files. Teaser coming this Thursday, 12 June 2025 PM. In cinemas on 05 September 2025”.
With an emphasis on Direct Action Day and the Noakhali riots, "The Bengal Files," which was produced by Abhishek Agarwal, Pallavi Joshi, and Agnihotri himself, explores the horrific communal violence that afflicted undivided Bengal in the 1940s.
In an attempt to bring attention to long-neglected historical incidents, the director refers to the events shown in the film as a "Hindu genocide."
The movie stars Joshi, Anupam Kher, and Mithun Chakraborty in pivotal roles. Large portions of the film had to be shot in Mumbai and not Kolkata due to safety concerns.
In an interview with Hindustan Times, the filmmaker shared the rationale for the title change. "The film's primary focus is Bengal. We had intended to create a two-part project, with the first being a movie called Delhi Files and the second being based on the Bengal chapter,” he asserted.
In a previous social media video, Agnihotri invited the public to participate in their research while offering insight into the movie's theme. "ATTENTION: We are crowdsourcing research for our future film about Bengal," he wrote as the caption for the photo. This is your opportunity if you choose to help shape history. Please watch through to the finish and respond to the crucial question I provide at the end. Additionally, remember to share.
Agnihotri is seen asking a thought-provoking question in the video: "Will Bengal turn into another Kashmir?"—implying that the movie will act as a wake-up call as well as a warning.
