Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay is making moves to resurrect ‘Jana Nayagan’, the long-delayed film widely regarded as the final cinematic project of the star before his political transition. The project, once halted after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) withheld clearance, is now back in motion with government backing expected to help resolve the certification hurdles.

According to a report by India Today, efforts are underway to secure the necessary approvals and push the film toward release. Sources say the Chief Minister has personally intervened to revive the stalled production.

Producer called back to Chennai

According to sources, Vijay has asked producer KVN Venkat K Narayana to urgently return to Chennai to accelerate the process. Narayana, who was at the Cannes Film Festival when the request came, is reportedly flying back to oversee fast-moving developments related to the film.

The movie was screened by the CBFC on 19 December 2025, but the certification was withheld nearly a month later despite the team complying with the board’s initial instructions. Objections raised included excessive violence, the unauthorised use of a defence emblem requiring expert clearance, and scenes with alleged communal overtones. These were among the reasons cited for withholding certification.

Producer confirms two-week release timeline

In comments made at Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony, Narayana had earlier stated that the production was close to completion of the final approval stage. “Final processes are underway, and we are in discussions with them. We are very happy and excited,” he said, adding that the film is expected to release “in approximately 14 days.”

The producer, whose banner KVN Productions has backed what is seen as Vijay’s last film before shifting full-time to politics, praised the chief minister’s consistency. “I know Vijay sir personally. He is very disciplined and dedicated, and whatever he promises, he fulfils. He walks the talk,” Narayana said.

He also suggested that the film’s title and its themes resonate with the political shift underway in the state. “I think a new leadership, a new era begins… He has turned out to be ‘Jana Nayagan’ (a man of the people) for the people of Tamil Nadu,” he said.

Setbacks, leaks and legal trouble

Narayana acknowledged that the project had faced several “unfortunate” incidents in the past, including delays linked to the certification process. The film also suffered a major setback when it was leaked illegally online. A freelance assistant editor and several others were arrested in connection with the leak.

The anticipation surrounding ‘Jana Nayagan’ has remained high as it marks a defining point in Vijay’s career, coinciding with his move into public life.
