Thalapathy Vijay's much-anticipated swansong, ‘Jana Nayagan’, has crossed the ₹100 crore mark globally within two days of release, but its domestic momentum has slowed considerably after a strong opening. The H Vinoth directorial witnessed a steep drop in collections on Friday, signalling mixed audience reception despite the massive fanfare surrounding its theatrical debut.

The film, which hit cinemas on July 23 and is billed as Vijay's final outing before his full-time political career, opened to mixed-to-negative reviews from critics. While fans turned the release into a celebration with first-day-first-show events across Tamil Nadu, the box office numbers suggest the initial excitement did not fully translate into sustained earnings.

Collections fall by more than 50% on Day 2

According to trade website Sacnilk, ‘Jana Nayagan’ earned ₹21.15 crore net in India on its second day, a drop of around 50.5% from its opening-day collection of ₹42.70 crore.

With this, the film's total India net collection stands at ₹63.85 crore after two days. Its India gross has reached ₹75 crore, while overseas markets have contributed ₹37.50 crore gross, taking the worldwide total to ₹112.50 crore.

The Tamil version remained the biggest contributor on Friday, collecting ₹17.95 crore net. The Hindi dubbed version added ₹1.85 crore, while the Telugu version earned ₹1.35 crore.

Still behind Vijay's previous blockbusters

Although ‘Jana Nayagan’ crossed ₹100 crore worldwide in just two days, it has been unable to match the early pace of Vijay's previous releases.

After two days, ‘The Greatest of All Time’ had collected ₹69.50 crore net in India, while ‘Leo’ had amassed ₹99.05 crore net during the same period.

Worldwide, the gap is even wider. ‘GOAT’ had earned ₹152.94 crore gross in two days, whereas ‘Leo’ had touched ₹210.21 crore globally. In comparison, ‘Jana Nayagan’ currently stands at ₹112.50 crore worldwide.

Occupancy improves as the day progresses

Despite the decline in collections, cinema occupancy showed an upward trend through Friday.

The Tamil version recorded an overall occupancy of 44.33%, beginning with 32.77% during morning shows before climbing to 37.23% in the afternoon. Evening screenings registered 47% occupancy, while night shows peaked at 60.31%.

The Hindi version recorded an overall occupancy of 11.48%, while the Telugu version stood at 22.77%.

Tamil Nadu remains the film's biggest market

Tamil Nadu continued to drive the film's business, contributing around ₹15 crore gross on the second day.

Karnataka followed with ₹3.22 crore gross, while Andhra Pradesh and Telangana together added ₹2 crore. Kerala also contributed ₹2 crore, with the remaining parts of India accounting for approximately ₹2.50 crore. The film's total India gross for Friday stood at ₹24.72 crore.

Grand celebrations greeted Vijay's farewell film

The release of ‘Jana Nayagan’ was marked by large-scale celebrations across several theatres in Tamil Nadu.

Fans organised laser shows, danced outside cinema halls and cheered during first-day-first-show screenings. Popular venues such as Woodlands and Casino theatres in Chennai hosted special performances, while actor Ravi Mohan was also seen joining audiences in celebrating Vijay's final film.

About 'Jana Nayagan'

Directed by H Vinoth, ‘Jana Nayagan’ follows Vetri, played by Vijay, a prisoner serving a sentence for an undisclosed offence. While in prison, he develops a close bond with jail warden Srikanth and takes on the responsibility of mentoring his daughter, Viji, encouraging her dream of joining the Indian Army.

His quiet life is disrupted when his mysterious past resurfaces through the arrival of John Himmler, played by Bobby Deol, setting the stage for a dramatic confrontation.

Mounted on a reported budget of Rs 300-400 crore, the film has a runtime of 3 hours, 3 minutes, and 52 seconds and ranks among the most expensive Tamil productions to date. Media reports have also claimed that Vijay received between Rs 220 crore and Rs 240 crore for the project, making it one of the largest acting pay cheques in Indian cinema.

The film also stars Mamitha Baiju, Pooja Hegde, Prakash Raj and Bobby Deol in key roles. Originally slated for a January release, the project was delayed following certification issues involving the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
