Mumbai: Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan has revealed that his daughter Lara Dhawan was diagnosed with Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH), a condition affecting the hip joint, and has since undergone treatment and is recovering well.

Speaking on a podcast, Dhawan said Lara was diagnosed when she was around 1.5 years old. DDH occurs when the hip joint does not form properly, causing instability that can affect walking and movement.

The actor shared that while surgery was not required, Lara underwent a medical procedure to correct the condition and had to remain in a spica cast for nearly two and a half months, a phase he described as challenging for the family.

Dhawan emphasised that early diagnosis of DDH in children is crucial, noting that timely treatment can prevent long-term complications such as mobility issues or early-onset arthritis. He also highlighted the need for greater awareness of the condition in India, where early screening is not uniformly available.

Urging parents to remain vigilant, he advised consulting a paediatric specialist if they notice irregularities in a child’s movement or walking pattern during early development.

What is DDH?

Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip is a condition where a baby’s hip joint does not develop normally. It may be present at birth or develop during infancy, affecting one or both hips. Early treatment significantly improves outcomes.
