Vadivelu is one of the most celebrated stars in Tamil cinema, but his journey to stardom was anything but conventional. Coming from a poor background, Vadivelu’s entry into the film industry was entirely unexpected. Yet, in a remarkably short time, he rose to become the undisputed King of Comedy in Tamil cinema. His exceptional performance in Mari Selvaraj’s 2023 film Maamannan proved his versatility, showcasing that he could excel in roles beyond comedy. It is this inspiring story of Vadivelu’s unexpected rise that film director Alappuzha Ashraf shares. Ashraf recounts Vadivelu’s journey on his YouTube channel, painting a vivid picture of a man who started life as an ordinary individual, earning a living by framing photographs. It was during this modest phase of his life that fate intervened. Actor and director Rajkiran travelled to Madurai to attend the wedding of Ilango, the leader of his fans’ association. To keep Rajkiran company during his stay, Ilango sent none other than Vadivelu.

In the hotel room, while spending time with Rajkiran, Vadivelu spontaneously performed his comedy routines. Rajkiran, charmed by the rustic humour and natural wit of the small-town man, laughed heartily. Two years later, when Rajkiran was working on a new film and needed a comedian, he immediately remembered the man who had made him laugh in Madurai. Through Ilango, he reached out to Vadivelu and offered him a small role in the film. Vadivelu poured his heart into the performance, delivering his comedic numbers with unmatched flair. Impressed, Rajkiran even included Vadivelu in a song sequence. When the film was released, Vadivelu caught the audience's attention. Soon, more roles followed. His performance alongside Prabhu Deva in Kaathalan became his breakthrough. Gradually, Vadivelu surpassed other comedians of his time, cementing his place as a leading star in Tamil cinema.
