The Malayalam comedy-drama ‘Vaazha 2: Biopic of a Billion Bros’ has emerged as one of the surprise box office successes of the year, delivering strong numbers despite its modest scale and relatively fresh cast.  Following its impressive theatrical run, attention has now shifted to its digital premiere, with audiences keenly awaiting confirmation of its OTT release date.

Directed by debutant Savin SA, the sequel builds on the popularity of the first instalment and has struck a strong chord with younger audiences. While an official streaming date is yet to be announced, The ET reports that the film is likely to premiere on JioHotstar, which already hosts the original ‘Vaazha’ in multiple languages.

Expected OTT release window

Industry trends suggest that ‘Vaazha 2’ could arrive on streaming platforms within four to six weeks after the end of its theatrical run. This release pattern has been common for several recent Malayalam films. Given its theatrical release on April 2, the film is expected to make its digital debut sometime in May or early June, although viewers are still awaiting formal confirmation from the makers or the platform.

Strong box office performance

The film has delivered impressive commercial results both domestically and overseas. According to Sacnilk, it has collected ₹61.15 crore net in India so far, with the domestic gross reaching ₹70.78 crore. Overseas markets have contributed an additional ₹55.15 crore, pushing the worldwide total to ₹125.93 crore.

The film crossed the ₹100 crore mark globally within its first week, a significant milestone for a project reportedly made on a budget of around ₹10 crore. It opened with ₹4.75 crore net on its first day in India and maintained steady momentum in the following days. By the end of its first week, it had amassed ₹55.05 crore, with strong daily collections continuing into the second week.

Notably, the film surpassed the lifetime India earnings of ‘Aadu 3’, which collected ₹50.70 crore, in just over a week, underlining its widespread appeal.

Story and audience reception

Like its predecessor, ‘Vaazha 2’ centres on the lives of four young men often labelled as underachievers. The narrative follows their journey from carefree college days to navigating adulthood, responsibilities and personal growth.

Blending humour with emotional depth, the film explores friendship, uncertainty about the future and the pressures of societal expectations. The characters’ relatable struggles and evolving relationships have struck a chord with audiences, contributing to strong word-of-mouth and positive reception.

Cast and crew

The film features Hashir, Alan Bin Siraj, Ajin Joy and Vinayak V in lead roles, supported by a cast that includes Vijay Babu, Aju Varghese, Bijukuttan, Alphonse Puthren and Sudheesh.

The story for both instalments has been written by Vipin Das, who also serves as one of the producers. While the first film was directed by Anand Menon, the sequel marks Savin SA’s directorial debut.

Backing for the project also comes from Telugu producer Sahu Garapati, marking another successful venture for him this year. The film’s music, composed by Ankit Menon along with other contributors, plays a key role in shaping its tone, while cinematography by Akhil Lailasuran and editing by Kannan Mohan keep the narrative straightforward and engaging.
