Kozhikode: Actress Usha Haseena has voiced her support for bringing young office-bearers to the forefront of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), expressing her belief that this change would benefit the organization. She also emphasized the importance of having women on the executive committee who understand the needs of female members. Usha shared her views during Mathrubhumi News Super Prime Time.
"I never said that the AMMA organization is bad. I pointed out that the behavior and way of working of certain persons is not right. The organization must continue to exist, but it needs change," Usha stated. She highlighted the necessity of having the next generation of office bearers and executive members who respect and understand women’s issues, naming actors like Prithviraj, Kunchacko Boban, Tovino, and Asif Ali as ideal candidates.
Usha also urged that women office bearers should be chosen based on their willingness to listen to other women members. "I requested this time too, but women actors were brought into the committee who lack empathy for other women. The results were evident in the press conference," she said, indirectly refering to executive member Jomol's remarks. Usha stressed that women artists should recognize the gravity of their words and have the courage to question them, a request she has made for years.
Addressing a 1992 video of herself circulating on social media, Usha clarified that it reflected the challenges she faced in the film industry at that time. "There was no one to help me back then. I was left alone, and those who initially supported me eventually abandoned me. "When friends suggested opportunities in cinema, I was told I wasn't needed. Later, I came to know that a group of people had orchestrated all this," she revealed.
"When I entered the film industry, cinema was only based in Thiruvananthapuram. There was a group referred to as the Nair group. However, they never worked in a way that eliminated or blocked opportunities for people. Deserving and talented individuals would get a chance. Later, the industry split into two or three caucuses, like the Thiruvananthapuram belt and the Ernakulam belt. When cinema started focusing on mid-Kerala, these groups and several people began to control opportunities, favoring some and sidelining others," she pointed out.
