The shooting incident involving Tiger Shroff’s car in Mumbai has brought renewed attention to the security arrangements in place for Bollywood celebrities. Following the incident in Juhu on October 18, police increased security outside the actor’s residence, while protection measures around other prominent film personalities have also come under scrutiny.

From armed police personnel accompanying actors to additional protection at their homes, security arrangements vary according to the perceived level of threat. Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Kangana Ranaut are among the Bollywood celebrities reported to have received Y-plus category security. Other actors and filmmakers have been granted different levels of protection or rely on private security services.

Here is a look at the reported security arrangements for some of Bollywood’s prominent names and the circumstances behind them.

  • Shah Rukh Khan: Shah Rukh Khan’s security was upgraded to the Y-plus category in October 2023, according to media reports. NDTV reported that the actor had sought protection from the Maharashtra government after receiving death threats following the release of his blockbuster film ‘Pathaan’. The controversy surrounding the film’s song ‘Besharam Rang’ had sparked political and public reactions. Following the reported threats, the actor’s security arrangements were strengthened. Reports also stated that Khan bears the expenses associated with his protection.
  • Kangana Ranaut: The central government granted Kangana Ranaut Y-plus category security in September 2020, according to The Indian Express. The decision came amid a political controversy after the actor compared Mumbai to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Her remarks drew criticism from Maharashtra government representatives and Shiv Sena leaders. The dispute intensified after Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut warned Ranaut against returning to Mumbai from Himachal Pradesh. The Centre subsequently provided her with enhanced protection amid concerns over her safety.
  • Salman Khan: Salman Khan has been under Y-plus category security provided by the Maharashtra government since November 2022, following threats reportedly linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. His reported security detail includes 11 to 12 Mumbai Police personnel, among them four armed commandos who accompany him. The arrangement also includes a specially trained constable with expertise in handling advanced weapons. Security around the actor was strengthened further in October 2024 following the murder of former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique. Police have also stepped up protection at Khan’s Galaxy Apartments residence in Bandra following the recent shooting incident involving Tiger Shroff’s car. Visuals shared by ANI showed police personnel in bulletproof jackets and police vehicles stationed outside the actor’s home.
  • Vivek Agnihotri and Anupam Kher: Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri was granted Y-category security by the central government in March 2022 following reports of an increased threat perception after the release of ‘The Kashmir Files’. Actor Anupam Kher, who also faced threats following the film’s release, was reportedly granted X-category security after a threat assessment, according to The Indian Express. While both were associated with the film that generated considerable public and political debate, their reported security classifications differ from the Y-plus category.
  • Akshay Kumar and Rohit Shetty: Akshay Kumar reportedly receives X-category security, with a Mid-Day report stating that the actor pays for his protection. Filmmaker Rohit Shetty, meanwhile, strengthened security around his Juhu residence following a gunfire incident in the area. Local police and crime branch personnel increased patrolling and implemented additional measures in response to the incident.
  • Aamir Khan: Aamir Khan’s protection arrangements reportedly include local police assistance or private security, depending on the circumstances and the assessment of potential threats. In July 2026, police temporarily increased security outside his residence in Pali Hill, Bandra West, following unverified threat calls and social media audio clips reportedly linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Unlike the reported Y-plus arrangements for Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Kangana Ranaut, Khan’s security measures have varied according to the situation.

Tiger Shroff firing incident puts celebrity security in focus

The recent incident involving Tiger Shroff has once again highlighted the security concerns surrounding Bollywood personalities.

On October 18, unidentified gunmen reportedly fired multiple rounds at the actor’s car as he left a football ground in Mumbai’s Juhu area. Shroff escaped without bullet injuries but sustained minor cuts and bruises from broken glass and gunpowder. His driver and another person were also injured and received medical treatment.

Mumbai and Rajasthan police subsequently arrested three suspects - Phool Singh, 18, Hrithik Kumar, 22, and Rehan, 22 - at Kota railway station in Rajasthan. The suspects were allegedly attempting to flee towards Nepal.

Investigators are also examining a social media claim linking the shooting to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang and overseas-based figures Anil Pandit and Harman Sandhu. The alleged links remain subject to investigation.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and other officials visited Shroff at his residence and assured him of increased security. Mumbai Police also stepped up protection outside the actor’s home following the shooting.

How is celebrity security determined?

Police protection for film personalities depends on assessments of potential threats and the circumstances surrounding individual cases. The arrangements may include different categories of police security, local police assistance or privately hired personnel.

A state-level committee periodically reviews threat perceptions involving film personalities and can recommend changes to existing arrangements. Depending on its findings, protection may be upgraded, downgraded or withdrawn.
