To many Malayalam cinema fans, the name Vimala evokes an immediate connection with Pattalam—Lal Jose’s 2003 film starring Mammootty. Debutante Tessa Joseph’s portrayal of the quiet, grieving widow Vimala left an indelible mark on audiences. Set against the backdrop of a terror threat in a Kerala village, the film featured an Army unit’s tense mission and a subtle, emotional undercurrent—of which Vimala was the heart.

Despite the impact of her first film, Tessa disappeared from the silver screen soon after. In a recent interview with Grihalakshmi, she opened up about the personal reasons behind her prolonged absence and the struggles she faced upon returning to the industry.

“Lal Jose sir called me to Pattalam after watching the show Hello Good Evening on TV. When I first entered the big world of cinema, I was tense. It was a time when there were many misconceptions about the film industry,” Tessa said.

It was her mother’s anxiety about the industry's reputation that led to Tessa stepping away. “My mother got tense after hearing all that. She was afraid that I wouldn’t get a good marriage proposal. After the release of Pattalam, she confirmed the first proposal that came to her,” Tessa revealed, referring to the marriage proposal her family promptly accepted.

“After marriage, I gave importance to the family. Even when I decided to come back, my mother was tense,” she added.

Years later, with her children grown, Tessa made the decision to return to acting—but the journey wasn’t easy. “It was very difficult to come back. I had given many interviews. Some people were disappointed when they knew that I was in Abu Dhabi. Thalavan was one of the good films I did in my second comeback. But even today, I am Vimala in Pattalam for many people.”

That enduring identification with her character reflects the cultural impact of Pattalam, which blended national security concerns with intimate, emotional narratives. In the film, an Army unit led by Major Pattabhiraman arrives in a village under terror alert. There, he meets Vimala, a widow living in her late husband Nandu’s home. As the story unfolds, it is revealed that the Major had killed Nandu in combat—describing it as a mercy killing, since Nandu was critically wounded. Vimala ultimately forgives Pattabhiraman, and the two unite.

Now active again in both television serials and cinema, Tessa Joseph is steadily rebuilding her space in the Malayalam film industry. Her recent appearance at the success celebration of Thalavan—a 2024 Malayalam-language mystery action thriller directed by Jis Joy and starring Biju Menon and Asif Ali—garnered widespread attention.
