New Delhi: Telangana Minister Danasari Anasuya Seethakka has raised concerns about the recognition given to films that portray criminals as heroes, pointing out the oversight of socially significant films like 'Jai Bhim'.
Her comments come in the wake of a stampede at a screening of 'Pushpa-2' in Hyderabad, where the lead character, played by Allu Arjun, is depicted as a red sanders smuggler.
The Minister, speaking at an event in Mulugu district, voiced her disappointment over the national recognition of a film that glorifies a smuggler, while critically acclaimed movies that have a social impact, such as 'Jai Bhim', were not acknowledged.
Minister questions the heroism of smugglers in cinema
“How can a smuggler be portrayed as a hero, while the police officer trying to curb smuggling is depicted as the villain?” Seethakka questioned.
She believes such portrayals could send the wrong message to society and possibly encourage criminal behaviour. She also stressed the need for films that carry strong societal values and meaningful messages. She emphasised the role of filmmakers in guiding society towards positive change through their work.
“Films should aim to elevate society,” Seethakka concluded, adding that while cinema is an entertaining medium, it must also offer constructive and humanitarian messages.
She further highlighted that the film industry has the power to influence minds and should be used as a tool for promoting social good.
