Malayali director Nithish Sahadev has given actor Jiiva a fresh lease of life. After directing the Basil Joseph-starrer Falimy, Nithish made his Tamil comeback with Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil (TTT), turning it into a celebratory return for Jiiva.

Jiiva, who had won over Malayalam audiences with Keerthi Chakra alongside Mohanlal, had struggled to deliver major theatrical hits in recent years. Released for Pongal in Tamil Nadu, TTT emerged victorious at the box office despite competing with films starring Karthi and Sivakarthikeyan.

This Pongal season initially had high expectations for Vijay’s Jananayagan. However, when the film ran into legal trouble, Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil, which was originally slated for a later release, arrived for Pongal instead.

TTT outperformed Sudha Kongara’s Sivakarthikeyan-starrer Parasakthi, which told the story of Tamil Nadu’s anti-Hindi agitations of the past, as well as the action-comedy Vaa Vaathiyaare starring Karthi and Krithi Shetty.

Interestingly, Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil was a story Nithish had conceived even before Falimy. Inspired by a real-life incident that occurred near co-writer Sanjo Joseph’s house, the story was developed by Nithish, Sanjo, and Anuraj. The plot revolves around two neighboring houses, with a death in one and a wedding in the other forming the emotional core of the narrative. Though Nithish narrated the story to several actors in Malayalam, none were willing to play one among many significant characters. The project was shelved temporarily, and Nithish moved on to another film—eventually debuting with Falimy, which gained strong audience appreciation.

Following Falimy, Nithish received an invitation from Tamil producers interested in a remake. Jiiva was among those who praised the film. While Nithish was initially set to work on a project with Mammootty, the superstar’s brief health-related break created an opportunity for him to accept the Tamil offer.

Instead of a remake, Nithish pitched this long-cherished story. Since weddings and funerals are celebrated with great intensity in Tamil Nadu, he shifted the backdrop from Kerala to Tamil Nadu. Jiiva and the producer were instantly on board, and within months, the project went on floors.

Director Nithish Sahadev is thrilled with the unexpected Pongal success of Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil.

“We visited theatres in the interiors of Tamil Nadu as part of the promotions. The response was overwhelming. Many viewers say the story feels like something that happened in their own neighborhood. Jiiva has been a favourite since my school days. Though he hadn’t had major hits recently, this film made me witness firsthand the love audiences still have for him as an actor,” said Nithish.

The film has now also been released on OTT platforms. The strong Malayali presence behind the scenes is noteworthy: Vishnu Vijay composed the music that emotionally connected audiences to the story, while Arjun Babu handled editing. The supporting cast includes Thambi Ramaiah, Ilavarasu, Prarthana Nathan, Sai Vignesh, Surjith Gopinath, and Mala Parvathi. The film is produced by Kannan Ravi under the banner of Kannan Ravi Productions.
