The dispute arose after distributors demanded 55 per cent of the box office collections for the first two weeks, which had prompted the imposition of a ban.

The release of Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1, directed by and starring Rishab Shetty, has been cleared for theatres in Kerala after initial hurdles. The Film Exhibitors United Organisation of Kerala (FEUOK) confirmed that the film will indeed be screened across the state. The decision followed discussions led by the Film Chamber involving the Producers’ Association, Distributors’ Association and FEUOK.
The dispute arose after distributors demanded 55 per cent of the box office collections for the first two weeks, which had prompted the imposition of a ban. A consensus was later reached: distributors will receive 55 per cent in the first two weeks (14 days without any “hold-over” clause). Welcoming the arrangement to proceed without hold-over restrictions, producers Prithviraj and Listin Stephen also endorsed the decision.
Speaking to Mathrubhumi.com, FEUOK executive member Bobby clarified that the conflict regarding the release of Kantara 2 in Kerala had been resolved. He explained that the differences with distributor Magic Frames had been settled through negotiations, and dismissed reports suggesting that the film’s Kerala release had been blocked.
The Kerala distribution rights for the film have been jointly taken up by Prithviraj Productions and Magic Frames. While Magic Frames had initially insisted on receiving 55 per cent of the net collections for two weeks, FEUOK had granted approval only for one week. The standoff was ultimately resolved through compromise after further talks.
Released in 2022, the first instalment of Kantara, also directed by Rishab Shetty, became a blockbuster hit, winning widespread acclaim. Shetty went on to win the National Award for Best Actor for his performance.
The sequel is set for release on October 2 in Kannada, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, English and Bengali. The film is being produced by Hombale Films, one of India’s leading pan-India production houses, renowned for blockbusters such as KGF, Kantara and Salaar.
