Mumbai:Renowned filmmaker Shyam Benegal's last rites will be performed at the Shivaji Park Electric Crematorium in Mumbai at 2 PM on Tuesday. The trailblazer of Indian parallel cinema, passed away on Monday at the age of 90.

Shabana Azmi, one of India’s most celebrated actors who regarded Benegal as her "guru," shared the time of his cremation on her Instagram stories, paying tribute to the man who played a pivotal role in shaping her illustrious career. The legendary director leaves behind his wife, Nira, and his daughter, Pia.

Benegal’s passing marks the end of an era in Indian cinema. Known for his thought-provoking films that redefined storytelling, he was a pioneer of parallel cinema, addressing social issues and human rights through his unique narrative style. With critically acclaimed works like Ankur (1973), Nishant (1975), and Bhumika (1977), Benegal established himself as one of the most influential filmmakers in Indian cinema.

Throughout his illustrious career, Benegal was honored with numerous accolades, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest award in cinema, the Padma Bhushan, and the Padma Shri. His contributions to Indian cinema have left an indelible mark on the industry.
