Mumbai: Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan’s 2014 film ‘Happy New Year’ was a massive box office success, grossing approximately Rs 397 crore worldwide against a production budget of Rs 150 crore. The film, directed by Farah Khan, was a complete entertainer, combining comedy, music and drama, which resonated with audiences globally. But what many fans might not know is that several big stars were initially approached to be part of this massive hit, but for various reasons, they couldn’t make it into the final cast.

While Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Sonu Sood, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani and Jackie Shroff all played pivotal roles, ‘Happy New Year’ could have had an even more star-studded lineup if the schedules of these actors had aligned. Farah Khan, who had a vision of bringing together a powerful ensemble, initially approached several Bollywood’s biggest stars for key roles in the film. However, due to date conflicts and other commitments, many of them had to opt-out.

One of the most notable names that could have joined the cast was Priyanka Chopra. Director Farah Khan had hoped to bring the multi-talented actress on board for a role in the film, but Priyanka's busy schedule prevented her from taking part. Similarly, the film’s casting process also saw other prominent Bollywood stars like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sonakshi Sinha, Asin, Parineeti Chopra and Katrina Kaif being approached for various roles. However, due to scheduling issues or personal reasons, none of them could come on board for Happy New Year.

Interestingly, Happy New Year could have also seen John Abraham and Prithviraj in roles that eventually went to Sonu Sood. Reports suggest that both actors were approached, but they too could not commit to the project. 

Despite the initial hurdles in assembling the cast, the film turned out to be one of the biggest hits of the year. Produced by Shah Rukh Khan’s wife Gauri Khan, ‘Happy New Year’ captured the hearts of millions and became a classic in Indian cinema. Its widespread popularity and success were a perfect example of King Khan’s unparalleled star power.
