Sean 'Diddy' Combs has been moved from New Jersey's Fort Dix prison to a low-security facility in Pennsylvania.

Sean “Diddy” Combs has been transferred from a federal prison in New Jersey to another low-security facility in Pennsylvania, days after reports emerged that he had sustained a head injury requiring medical attention. The move comes amid reports of disciplinary violations at his previous prison, including the alleged possession of contraband and repeated breaches of prison rules.
The 56-year-old music producer was moved from the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Fort Dix to FCI Allenwood Low on Friday, October 16, according to the US Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP). However, authorities have not publicly disclosed the specific reason for the transfer, leaving questions about whether it was connected to his reported injury, disciplinary record or concerns about his safety.
Combs' representative, Juda Engelmayer, has indicated that safety and security considerations were relevant to the move, although the BOP has not confirmed that explanation.
What did officials say about Sean Combs' prison transfer?
A BOP spokesperson confirmed the transfer to Entertainment Weekly but declined to provide further details about the decision.
“We can confirm that Sean Combs transferred to FCI Allenwood Low on Friday, October 16, 2026. For privacy, safety, and security reasons, we do not discuss the conditions of confinement for any individual in our custody, including reasons for transfer.”
Engelmayer highlighted that both Fort Dix and Allenwood Low are classified as low-security facilities, suggesting that the move did not involve a change in security classification.
“His transfer from one low-security facility to another is an important distinction, and while we cannot speak to the BOP's specific reasons for the move, it is consistent with a decision made with safety and security in mind.”
In a separate statement reported by The Guardian, Engelmayer said, “decisions about inmate placement are made by the BOP, and we are not in a position to speak to the circumstances surrounding this transfer”.
“Sean remains focused on moving forward, and we hope that his time at the new facility will be productive and without unnecessary disruption,” Engelmayer added.
The Associated Press, citing a person familiar with the matter who was not authorised to speak publicly, also reported the transfer. Agence France-Presse subsequently confirmed that the BOP had acknowledged the move.
What happened before Combs' transfer?
Reports about Combs' health emerged after an incident on October 10. TMZ initially reported that he had been taken out of the prison for medical treatment following a head injury and returned to the facility later that day.
Deadline and People also reported on the incident. However, the circumstances surrounding the reported injury, including how it occurred, remain unclear.
Engelmayer told Entertainment Weekly, “We are aware of the reports concerning Sean Combs and are working to confirm the circumstances.”
People reported that Combs' injuries were not life-threatening.
TMZ subsequently reported on October 14 that Combs had been injured in a fight with another inmate at Fort Dix. However, the BOP disputed that account in comments to the Associated Press, stating: “The story you are referring to is false and did not happen.”
The conflicting reports have left the circumstances surrounding the alleged medical emergency unresolved. There has been no official confirmation that a fight caused Combs' reported head injury or that the incident directly prompted his transfer.
Alleged contraband and prison rule violations
The transfer also follows reports of disciplinary issues during Combs' incarceration at Fort Dix.
In September, NBC News reported that the music producer had allegedly continued to enjoy certain aspects of his wealthy lifestyle while in prison. According to the report, he had access to Hennessy cognac, used a contraband mobile phone to view social media and an ex-girlfriend's nude photographs, and received assistance from other inmates with cooking, cleaning, making his bed and massages.
Following the report, Combs was reportedly placed in the prison's Special Housing Unit, a more restrictive section used to separate inmates for disciplinary or security reasons.
TMZ also reported that Combs had received multiple disciplinary write-ups at Fort Dix, including for alleged phone violations and fights. The outlet claimed that he had been sent to the Special Housing Unit twice for rule-breaking.
According to TMZ, the reported penalties included the loss of 41 days of good-time credit, which can help eligible prisoners secure an earlier release, as well as 400 days of commissary privileges.
The Associated Press, citing a person familiar with the matter, also reported that Combs had lost 41 days of good-conduct credit. The reported penalty pushed his projected release date back to March 2, 2028.
Although the reports detail several alleged violations, prison officials have not publicly established that these issues were the specific reason for his transfer to Allenwood Low.
Could the new prison offer greater security?
FCI Allenwood Low is located south of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, approximately 155 miles (250 kilometres) west of New York City.
One possible explanation for the transfer concerns the relative size of the two institutions. TMZ reported that Allenwood Low houses around 1,000 inmates, compared with approximately 4,000 at Fort Dix.
The smaller inmate population could potentially make it easier for prison staff to monitor Combs' safety, particularly given the reports surrounding his injury and alleged disciplinary problems. However, this remains speculation, and the BOP has not confirmed that the facility's size or concerns about his personal security influenced the decision.
The authorities have also not clarified whether Combs' reported medical emergency played any role in determining his new placement.
Why is Sean Combs in prison?
Combs is serving a four-year-and-two-month sentence following his July 2, 2025, conviction on prostitution-related charges involving the transportation of people across state lines for sexual encounters.
The trial featured testimony about violence and sexual encounters known as “freak-offs”. The verdict marked a significant legal setback for the music mogul, who was once among the most influential figures in the entertainment industry.
In April, the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit heard arguments in Combs' challenge to his conviction and sentence. His lawyers argued that the punishment was too harsh, but the court had yet to issue a ruling as of the latest reports.
