Celebrity chef Ranveer Brar revealed a challenging period in his life where he lost his Boston restaurant due to a partner fallout, leading to homelessness

Celebrity chef Ranveer Brar is a household name in India today, beloved for his cooking expertise, television appearances, and storytelling through food. However, beneath the polished public image lies a journey marked by hardship, resilience, and rebirth. In a candid conversation on the Ranveer Allahbadia Podcast, Brar opened up about one of the toughest chapters of his life — being thrown out of his Boston restaurant, becoming homeless, and rebuilding his career from the ground up.
The fall: Losing everything overnight
Ranveer Brar’s restaurant venture in Boston came to a sudden, devastating end due to a fallout with his business partners. “My restaurant in Boston crashed. We had a fallout, and I was thrown out of the restaurant by the partners,” he revealed. This abrupt loss left him bankrupt, homeless, and with nowhere to go. For days, Brar slept on benches in the city, living day-to-day without certainty about the future and facing the humbling reality of failure for the first time.
He recounted how, during that period, he was left with only a small sum of money that soon ran out. Too proud to ask for help, he had to face the streets alone. Yet, despite the challenges, Brar said he chose to embrace this phase. “Those days taught me not to take myself too seriously. Even though it was tough, I actually enjoyed the phase because it taught me so much,” he said.
Finding strength in cooking
During his darkest hours, Brar found solace and strength in the very thing that defined his life — cooking. He recalled helping cook langar at a Gurudwara kitchen, a practice that reconnected him to his roots and gave him hope. His passion for food and the skills he had honed since childhood became his saving grace.
Brar’s journey began in Lucknow, where he developed a love for cooking as a child, helping his grandmother and learning the art of kebabs from master chefs. Despite initial family resistance to his career choice, his dedication saw him become one of India's youngest executive chefs by age 25. However, the Boston failure was a hard reset that forced him to reflect and rebuild.
The philosophy that keeps him grounded
Even as he found new success, Brar shared that a lesson from his grandfather continues to keep him humble and grounded. “Whenever you start feeling like a big landlord, just look at the land once. It will only yield for you if you work on it; otherwise, a flood or drought can wipe everything out, and you're back to zero,” he recalled.
Today, he tries to keep this humility alive in small rituals, like taking an auto-rickshaw ride daily to stay connected with everyday life’s simplicity. His parents remain his anchor; whenever he feels overwhelmed or overly proud, looking at them helps reset his perspective, he said.
Rebuilding and rising
After the Boston episode, Brar returned to India in 2012 due to his father's health. This move marked a turning point. He ventured into television, hosting cooking shows and eventually becoming a judge on MasterChef India, where his storytelling through food resonated widely.
