R Madhavan opens up on ‘friend’ Vijay becoming CM; Reveals why he'll never join politics

R Madhavan has reacted to Thalapathy Vijay's rise as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, saying he is proud to see his longtime friend take on the state's highest political office.

However, the actor also made it clear that while he is happy to witness the changing political landscape, he has no plans to follow Vijay into politics.

The actor made the remarks during the promotions of his upcoming Tamil film ‘GDN’, where he was in conversation with filmmaker KS Ravikumar. 

Speaking about Vijay's political journey, Madhavan said it has given him hope that change is possible. He added that watching someone he has known personally become Chief Minister was a proud moment.

"Yes, to see the political landscape change so quickly and to see how it's possible has given us the belief that change can happen. I know Vijay very well. I can proudly say that my friend Vijay has become CM Vijay," he said.

Madhavan also spoke warmly about Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, recalling that he has known him since childhood.

"When Inban was four years old, I remember him sitting on my lap and taking photos. He has also become such a big shot today. I'm really proud. If the politics is healthy and they do good for the people, then I'll be really happy," he added.

Despite praising both leaders, Madhavan made it clear that he does not see himself entering politics.

Calling politics a challenging space, the actor said public life comes with criticism regardless of one's intentions or performance.

"Politics is a very double-edged sword. You'll get scolded even if you do well, and you'll get scolded even if you make mistakes. No matter what you do, there will be one group that looks at it negatively," he said.

When asked whether he would ever consider joining politics, Madhavan gave a straightforward reply.

"Absolutely no interest," he said.

Explaining his decision further, the actor said he has never had the desire to lead people or hold political office. According to him, politics should be driven by a genuine spirit of public service, something he does not believe he possesses.

"Not at all. We need to have the thought of service in our minds. Today, the thought of authority has gone. I don't have that. I don't want to lead the people and become the Chief Minister. I am selfish that way," he said.

Madhavan added that he prefers contributing to society in his own way rather than through politics.

"I will continue doing good that I know. From the beginning, I haven't had a proper understanding of politics. I know I should respect the person who has been elected democratically," he said.

On the work front, Madhavan will next be seen in ‘GDN’, a biographical drama based on the life of renowned inventor and industrialist GD Naidu. Directed by Krishnakumar Ramakumar, the film is scheduled to release in theatres on August 7.
