Released in 2011, Urumi was made on a budget of over ₹20 crore and featured an ensemble cast including Prithviraj Sukumaran, Arya, Prabhu Deva, Genelia D’Souza, Nithya Menon, and Vidya Balan.

Kochi: More than a decade after the release of Santosh Sivan’s epic historical drama Urumi (2011), writer-filmmaker Shankar Ramakrishnan has confirmed that the long-awaited sequel is finally taking shape.
Speaking in an interview with Sabha TV, Ramakrishnan revealed that he has completed the script for Urumi 2, which took him 12 years to finish.
“It took me 12 years to finish it. The story is set in Kerala, 100 years after the events of Urumi,” Ramakrishnan said. The filmmaker added that Vadakara will serve as the main location for the sequel. The team has already begun preparations, including costume design, casting, and in-depth research.
Explaining the creative vision, Ramakrishnan said that for the sequel, he has envisioned two follow-up films, and one script is now complete.
Will Santosh Sivan and Prithviraj return?
While the script is ready, questions remain about the director and lead actor. It is yet to be confirmed whether Santosh Sivan will return to helm the sequel and if Prithviraj Sukumaran will reprise his role.
Released in 2011, Urumi, also known as Urumi: The Warriors Who Wanted to Kill Vasco da Gama, was made on a budget of over ₹20 crore and featured an ensemble cast including Prithviraj Sukumaran, Arya, Prabhu Deva, Genelia D’Souza, Nithya Menon, and Vidya Balan. Though not a massive box office success, the film was hailed as a game-changer in Malayalam cinema for its scale, production quality, and historical storytelling.
