In the 1970s and 1980s, Zeenat Aman and Parveen Babi were regarded as the glamour queens of Indian cinema. These stars brought their own unique style to everything—from their fashion sense to their performances and dance routines. Both actresses took on bold roles that many other actresses at the time hesitated to portray, and they did so with remarkable confidence.
Alongside glamorous roles, both Zeenat and Parveen stood out in the realm of item dances, captivating audiences with their energetic performances. Though they had no significant physical similarities, their hairstyles and fashion choices bore striking resemblances. This often led to fans confusing one for the other.
Recently, Zeenat Aman shared her thoughts on this confusion during a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” session. She recounted a rather touching encounter: "I was in Dubai when a woman approached me. She hugged me and started speaking to me, believing I was Parveen. She was one of her many admirers. I was mistaken for Parveen after her passing. I was thinking to myself, how do I tell this fan that the actress they admired is no more?" Zeenat also fondly reminisced about her close friendship with Parveen.
Zeenat Aman was the first to enter the film industry and revolutionised Bollywood fashion with her unique blend of modern and traditional styles. Her outfits, which included deep-neck silver gowns, sequin dresses, bralette tops, and bikinis, were adored by the youth of that time. One of her most talked-about outfits in Satya Shivam Sundaram earned her significant criticism, but she defended her choices, explaining that while she embraced female beauty, it was never about vulgarity. She wasn’t affected by how people branded her as a "sex doll."
When Parveen Babi arrived in the industry, she had a similar look to Zeenat. Fans quickly began referring to her as "the poor man’s Zeenat Aman," but in no time, Parveen carved a permanent place in the hearts of her admirers.
Both these cinematic icons also shared striking similarities in their personal lives. Parveen was romantically linked with Kabir Bedi, Danny Denzongpa, and Mahesh Bhatt, but none of these relationships brought her happiness. All of them ended prematurely. Similarly, Zeenat’s personal life was troubled by issues in her marriage to Bollywood superstar Sanjay Khan and her relationship with actor-producer Mazhar Khan. Unfortunately, both her marriages faced constant struggles.
Zeenat and Parveen were more than just glamour icons in the film industry; they were trendsetters and pioneers of bold, unapologetic roles. While their personal lives were marred by tumult, their contributions to Indian cinema remain significant, and their legacy continues to influence Bollywood to this day.
