Kochi: The Malayalam film industry is set to make considerable investments in sports, marking a new era with actors and filmmakers venturing into team ownership. Actor Prithviraj and his wife Supriya have acquired a team in the Super League Kerala, poised to bring substantial changes to Kerala football. Following suit, director Priyadarshan and film producer-cum-businessman Sohan Roy have also secured franchises in the Kerala Cricket League.
Each team in the Super League football, consisting of six teams, will receive an investment of Rs 7 crore each, while stars can acquire stakes amounting to Rs 2 crore in each team. Super League Kerala's Managing Director Firoz Meeran and CEO Mathew Joseph highlighted Prithviraj's enthusiastic ownership of the team.
Prithviraj's involvement is expected to draw other film stars to participate in various league events. Organisers anticipate that stars owning teams will attract their fan base to support these teams as well.
Similarly, Priyadarshan and Sohan Roy's ownership in the Kerala Cricket League, modelled after the IPL, is anticipated to enhance the league's value.
President Jayesh George mentioned a surge of interest in the league with Priyadarshan joining as a team owner this season, leading to discussions about introducing new teams. The league's value has received a boost with actor Mohanlal as its brand ambassador. Each franchise in the first season of the Kerala Cricket League is projected to spend between Rs 2.5 crore to Rs 3.5 crore.
This year, the film industry is expected to invest a total of Rs 14 crore into cricket and football in Kerala. Efforts are underway to expand the number of teams in future seasons, with discussions already underway with several movie stars.
