Los Angeles: Mikey Madison took home the Best Actress honour at the Oscars for her role in 'Anora', solidifying her status as one of the night’s biggest winners. The film was already a frontrunner in several major categories, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Madison has been on a winning streak this awards season, previously securing Best Actress wins at the BAFTAs and Spirit Awards.

Accepting the prestigious award, Madison expressed her disbelief and gratitude.

“This is very surreal. I grew up in Los Angeles, but Hollywood always felt so far away from me, so to be here, standing in this room today is really incredible.”

She also took a moment to acknowledge the community her character represents in Anora.

“I just want to recognise and honour the sex worker community.”

Continuing her heartfelt speech, she reassured her support.

“Yes. I will continue to support and be an ally. All of the incredible people, the women that I’ve had the privilege of meeting from that community, have been one of the highlights of this incredible experience.”

Recognising fellow nominees

Madison was nominated alongside Fernanda Torres, Cynthia Erivo, Karla Sofía Gascon, and Demi Moore. Despite Moore’s early-season wins at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards, Madison cemented her Oscar frontrunner status after her BAFTA victory.

“I also just want to recognise the thoughtful, intelligent, beautiful, breathtaking work of my fellow nominees. I’m honoured to be recognised alongside all of you. This is a dream come true.”

Anora’s impact

In 'Anora', directed by Sean Baker, Madison plays the titular character, a sex worker whose life is thrown into turmoil after marrying the son of a Russian oligarch. At the BAFTAs, she had also made a powerful statement about the sex worker community.

“I do want to just take a moment to recognise the sex worker community. I just want to say that I see you.”

“You deserve respect and human decency. I will always be a friend and ally.”
