Actor Mathew Thomas has admitted that his performance in the film ‘Bromance’ may have gone overboard, responding to the wave of criticism that emerged after the film's release on the streaming platform.

Speaking to the media, Mathew acknowledged that the problem lay not with the audience but with how his character was interpreted and performed.

“There is no separation between theatre audience and OTT audience. There is only one audience. Even when the film was released in theatres, there were criticisms about my performance. I now realise that the ‘meter’ we chose for the character was off. When people say it went overboard, it’s because it truly was. It didn’t work for most viewers. It wasn’t because the audience changed or the platform shifted,” he said.

Mathew portrayed Binto, a man searching for his missing brother. He pointed out that the character was written with a medical condition, which was mentioned briefly in the film. However, he admitted that it may not have been communicated effectively.

“The character Binto has a medical situation, and it is mentioned briefly at one point. But the fact that most viewers didn’t understand it is probably not their fault; it’s more likely an issue with how I portrayed it. I should have performed it in a way that convinced everyone. The only thing to do now is understand what the audience is saying and why, and try to improve,” he added.

‘Bromance’ is directed by Arun D Jose, known for films such as ‘Jo and Jo’ and ‘18+.’ The cast includes Arjun Ashokan, Sangeeth Prathap, and Mahima Nambiar in lead roles. The film initially received favourable reviews and performed well at the box office during its theatrical release.Â
