Washington: In an exciting update, Netflix has released a new teaser trailer for the much-anticipated second season of Squid Game during its Geeked Week event in Atlanta.

The teaser, shared on Netflix's social media, features a tense scene with Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, as he faces a masked figure while holding a gun.

The trailer quickly shifts to showcase new contestants preparing to enter a fresh round of dangerous challenges, with a chilling voiceover in Korean saying, “We're ready to start the game.”

Set three years after Gi-hun's dramatic win in the first season, the story follows his return to the perilous game with a new sense of purpose. Having given up on plans to travel to the United States, Gi-hun dives back in alongside a new group of players competing for a massive prize of 45.6 billion won.

Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has mentioned that this season will show Gi-hun transformed and seeking revenge with a much more serious attitude. The original Squid Game became a cultural sensation, racking up an impressive 1.65 billion views in its first 28 days, making it Netflix's most-watched series to date.

Lee Jung-jae made history as the first Asian actor to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for a non-English program, while Dong-hyuk was recognised as the first Asian director to win an Emmy in the same category.

In a heartfelt letter about the season 2 announcement, Dong-hyuk reflected on the passage of time since the first season's debut, stating, "It's been almost three years since season 1 was met with incredible response around the world and many unimaginable events took place."

He also expressed his amazement at returning to the Squid Game universe and shared his excitement about how fans would react to the long-awaited return. Dong-hyuk elaborated, "Seong Gi-hun who vowed revenge at the end of season 1 returns and joins the game again. Will he succeed in getting his revenge? Front Man doesn't seem to be an easy opponent this time either," as per Deadline.

He also hinted at an ongoing conflict leading to a thrilling series finale in the planned third season, set to release in 2025.

Produced by Firstman Studio and executive produced by Kim Ji-yeon, Squid Game season 2 is scheduled to premiere on December 26, promising another gripping chapter in this captivating story.
