Chennai: The Madras High Court on Friday expressed concern over the possibility of members of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) Examining Committee retracting their recommendations to certify a film. Justice PT Asha warned that such a U-turn by any member could set a “dangerous trend,” undermining the authority and sanctity of CBFC decisions.

The remarks came amid the controversy surrounding the certification of actor-turned-politician Vijay’s upcoming film, ‘Jana Nayagan’. Initially, the Examining Committee had recommended a ‘UA’ certificate, subject to compliance with certain edits and modifications communicated to the producers.

However, the film was later sent for review following a complaint from one committee member, who alleged that his objections—claiming the film hurt religious sentiments and portrayed the armed forces objectionably—were not considered.

The court, however, observed that the member’s grievance appeared to be an “afterthought” and “motivated.” It noted that the Examining Committee, through its Chairperson, had already informed the producers of their decision to grant the UA certificate with specified modifications.

Justice PT Asha emphasised that once the committee’s decision had been communicated to the producers, the Chairperson no longer had the power to refer the film for further review.
