Mumbai: Filmmaker Karan Johar has questioned whether the entertainment industry, and its audience, has become collectively “complicit” in reducing cinema and celebrities to social media content.

Reflecting on the growing dominance of reels, clickbait headlines and paparazzi culture, Johar wrote on Instagram Stories that it may be time to shift attention from smartphones back to “the screen that matters, the silver screen”.

“Are we reduced to a reel? Are we just a clickbait headline? Are we just paparazzi spotting? Are we all complicit??? Yes, we are! Let's make movies... let's tell stories...let's go back to the only screen that matters! The silver screen! The smartphone screen can wait...”

He added a light disclaimer, saying the post was the result of “midnight musing” while feeling nauseous during a round of “doom scrolling”.

Johar’s comments carry added irony as he is among the most active Bollywood figures on social media and frequently shares his personal and professional life with followers.

Only a day earlier, the director had posted a humorous update on Instagram declaring ChatGPT his “new lover”, admitting he took time to warm up to AI but is now “deeply in love”. “I hope it’s not ek tarfa pyar,” he joked.
