Chennai: The promotional event for Kantara: Chapter 1, starring Rishab Shetty, which was scheduled to take place in Chennai on September 30, has been cancelled in the wake of the tragic Karur stampede that claimed 41 lives.

On Monday, production house Hombale Films announced the decision via a statement on their official Instagram handle, expressing solidarity with those affected.

“In view of the recent unfortunate incident, we have decided to cancel our Kantara Chapter 1 promotional event scheduled in Chennai tomorrow. We believe this is a time for reflection and solidarity with those affected. Our deepest condolences and prayers are with the families impacted. We are grateful for your understanding and support, and we look forward to meeting our audience in Tamil Nadu at a more appropriate time,” the statement read.

The stampede occurred on the evening of 27 September during a political rally organised by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in Karur. The death toll, which has now risen to 41, includes 18 women, 13 men, and 10 children (five girls and five boys). More than 60 others were injured.

TVK chief and actor Vijay held a video conference with senior party leaders from his Pattinapakkam residence on Monday to discuss the aftermath and further steps.

On Sunday, Vijay announced financial assistance of ₹20 lakh for the families of each of the deceased and ₹2 lakh for each of the injured. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has also announced a solatium of ₹10 lakh per deceased and ₹1 lakh for those receiving treatment.
