Chennai: Veteran actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan offered candid insights into his personal life during a promotional event for his upcoming film Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam and set for release on 5 June.

The event took a personal turn when actress Trisha, who stars alongside Haasan, was asked about her marital status. Responding with a calm and modern perspective, she said, “It’s okay if it happens, and okay if it doesn’t, too.”

This sparked Kamal Haasan to reflect on his own journey with marriage and beliefs.

Recalling an interview with journalist and current Member of Parliament John Brittas, the actor shared a revealing exchange. “Brittas once asked me why I married twice despite coming from a good Brahmin family. I asked him what a family’s reputation has to do with marriage,” he said.

When Brittas pressed him further, suggesting he hadn’t followed the example of Lord Rama, who had only one wife, Haasan replied with characteristic wit: “Firstly, I don’t pray to any god. I don’t follow Rama’s path. Probably I follow his father’s (Dasharatha) path—he had three wives.”

Haasan, a self-proclaimed atheist, has often spoken about his unconventional views on religion and society. He was first married to classical dancer Vani Ganapathy and later to actress Sarika, with whom he has two daughters.

With Thug Life, Haasan reunites with Mani Ratnam decades after their iconic collaboration in Nayakan.
