Hyderabad: Dismissing reports suggesting that she had attempted suicide at her residence in Hyderabad, playback singer Kalpana Raghavendar on Wednesday stated to the police that she had taken an excessive dose of sleeping pills due to difficulty in falling asleep following a disagreement with her daughter over her education.
According to the KPHB Police, Kalpana and her husband have been residing in Nizampet for the past five years. The dispute arose on March 3 when Kalpana expressed her wish for her daughter Daya Prasad to continue her studies in Hyderabad, which the latter opposed.
Kalpana reportedly returned from Ernakulam on March 4 and struggled to sleep. She informed the police that she initially consumed eight sleeping tablets but remained awake, prompting her to take an additional 10 tablets. She then lost consciousness and was unaware of what happened next.
Her husband Prasad alerted the colony welfare association after she did not respond to his calls. The welfare members informed the police, who broke open the door and found her unconscious. She was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital, where she regained consciousness.
Kalpana told the police that there was no suicide attempt and no external involvement in the incident. Her daughter Daya Prasad also refuted reports of a suicide attempt and stated that her mother had taken the pills due to stress.
"Please do not spread false information. Our family is doing well. My mom and dad are happy, and I am happy too. She will be back in a few days," Daya told the media.
Kalpana, daughter of renowned playback singers T S Raghavendra and Sulochana, began her musical journey at the age of five. She has recorded over 1,500 songs across several languages, including Malayalam, Telugu and Tamil.
The singer, who won the fifth season of the popular reality show Star Singer, has collaborated with legendary musicians such as M S Viswanathan, Ilaiyaraaja, A R Rahman, S P Balasubrahmanyam and K S Chithra. Kalpana also participated in the inaugural season of Bigg Boss Telugu, hosted by Jr NTR.
