Kochi: In a move stirring controversy, Bishop Dr. Joseph Kariyil has publicly criticised recent Malayalam films for their portrayal of content that conflicts with Christian beliefs. Speaking at a church-organised event for children, the bishop singled out several movies, including 'Aavesham', 'Premalu', and 'Manjummel Boys', for their depiction of violence, alcohol use, and references to the 'Illuminati' in a song.

The bishop's remarks have sparked debate within both the religious and film communities, with some questioning the appropriateness of such criticism and others expressing concerns about the influence of media on impressionable audiences, particularly young people.

“The movie 'Aavesham' focuses on violence and alcohol abuse. There are no scenes of children studying in hostels or teachers teaching. The film mainly showcases bar scenes and fights. Have you heard of the Illuminati? It's a group that opposes religion. That's the underlying message. Yet, some of you claim it's a great movie."

Bishop Kariyil also expressed his disapproval of 'Premalu' for its emphasis on drinking and fighting. As for "Manjummel Boys," he recognised its underlying message of friendship and the act of saving a friend from a cave, but he pointed out that the characters are shown consuming alcohol and experiencing bouts of vomiting during their journey.
