In a candid interview, actress Jyothika discussed the difficulties faced by female actors in the Tamil film industry, especially as they age. She shared that women often find it difficult to secure roles alongside top male stars once they reach a certain age. Jyothika was speaking during an interview for the promotion of the Netflix web series Dabba Cartel, which she gave to Fever FM.

Responding to the ongoing discussion about how male stars’ aging is generally accepted, while women’s aging is often not, Jyothika shared her personal experiences. She pointed out that after turning 28 and having children, the types of roles offered to her changed drastically. "Since I was 28, I haven’t acted alongside a major star or hero," she revealed. She also mentioned that building a career with new directors and finding meaningful roles post-28 has been a significant challenge. This trend, according to her, is not just confined to Tamil cinema but is prevalent across South Indian cinema as a whole.

Jyothika further spoke about how, in today’s industry, there are fewer films being made for or about women, and many of the big directors known for creating substantial roles for actresses, such as K. Balachander, are no longer active. "Today, directors are making big films for male stars, but there are no filmmakers creating significant films for female actors anymore," she said. "In South Indian cinema, the journey of an actress is fraught with difficulties. It’s a battle that she fights alone," Jyothika added.

Her words reflect the growing concerns about the representation and opportunities for female actors in an industry that remains largely male-dominated, especially when it comes to leading roles as women age.
