The heavyweights of Indian cinema are joining forces once again. In a monumental casting coup, the makers of director Rajkumar Periasamy’s highly anticipated next project have officially announced that legendary Bollywood actor Naseeruddin Shah has joined the cast, sharing screen space with Malayalam megastar Mammootty.

This marks a thrilling reunion for the duo after a massive 32-year hiatus.

A nod to a National Award-winning legacy

The last time Mammootty and Naseeruddin Shah breathed life into the same frame was in TV Chandran’s 1994 masterpiece ‘Ponthan Mada’. In that critically acclaimed classic, Mammootty delivered a towering performance in the titular role of 'Ponthan Mada', while Naseeruddin Shah played the sophisticated landlord, 'Sheema Thampuran'. Their extraordinary on-screen dynamic remains etched in cinematic history, with the film ultimately fetching Mammootty his second National Film Award for Best Actor.

Decades later, the announcement of their reunion has sent shockwaves of excitement through film circles and fan communities alike.

Massive hype and a heartwarming star gesture

Director Rajkumar Periasamy is currently riding a wave of massive success following his previous directorial ‘Amaran’ (starring Sivakarthikeyan), which achieved both critical acclaim and a staggering ₹300-crore milestone at the global box office. For this next venture, he has locked in Tamil superstar Dhanush as the central lead, with Mammootty stepping into a vitally important, powerful role.

The project is already generating intense industry buzz.

Record OTT deal: Reports indicate that the film’s digital rights have already been picked up for a record-shattering sum, though the specific streaming platform is being kept tightly under wraps.

A stellar gesture by Megastar: In a rare and highly discussed industry move, Mammootty reportedly turned down the initial remuneration offered to him. The producers had originally earmarked a whopping ₹35 crore for his role, but the megastar politely declined the exorbitant figure. After mutual discussions, his paycheck was renegotiated and finalised at a comfortable ₹24 crore to keep the production budget balanced.

With Mammootty having reportedly wrapped up his shooting schedules, the film is moving rapidly through post-production. Audiences won't have to wait too long to witness this historic clash of acting titans, as the project is slated for a grand theatrical release this October.
