Director and actor Prithviraj Sukumaran expressed profound sorrow and indignation over the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed at least 26 lives. Taking to Instagram Stories, he wrote, “Heartbroken and angry at what happened at Pahalgam! Thoughts and prayers with the families of the victims and really hope those responsible are brought to justice ASAP.”
His remarks come amid nationwide mourning and widespread condemnation of the assault, carried out by the militant organisation, The Resistance Front. Intelligence sources have identified Saifullah Kasuri, a Lashkar-e-Taiba commander based in Pakistan, as the mastermind behind the incident.
Prithviraj's message joins the voices of several public figures, including actors Mohanlal, Kamal Haasan, Alia Bhatt, Andrea Jeremiah and others, who have publicly expressed grief and solidarity, while urging justice and peace.
However, veteran Malayalam actor Mohanlal faced unexpected backlash following his statement condemning the attack. In a heartfelt Twitter post, he wrote: “My heart goes out to the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack. It is devastating to witness such cruelty... Let us hold on to each other a little tighter and never let go of the hope that peace will prevail even in the face of darkness.”
While many appreciated his message, some netizens criticised the actor for perceived hypocrisy. They referred to his role in the film Empuraan, in which he portrays a character that some interpreted as mentoring a Kashmiri youth who becomes a 'militant'. Critics argued that the film appeared to sympathise with terrorist ideology, contradicting his public condemnation of terrorism.
Despite the criticism, numerous fans came to Mohanlal’s defence, condemning the hostile responses and calling for a clear distinction between art and real life. The controversy reignited debate surrounding the film Empuraan, which went on to become the biggest blockbuster in Malayalam cinema, grossing over ₹300 crore at the global box office since its release on 27 March earlier this year. The film is currently streaming on Jio Hotstar. (With inputs from Agencies)
