Speculation around Bollywood actor Govinda’s marriage to Sunita Ahuja has resurfaced, with reports claiming she has filed for divorce citing “cruelty and adultery.” However, a close friend of the couple and Govinda’s lawyer have both downplayed the rumours, insisting that the matter is being settled.

Divorce reports resurface

According to documents accessed by Hauterrfly, Sunita allegedly filed for divorce in the Bandra Family Court on December 5, 2024, under Section 13 (1)(i), (ia) and (ib) of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. The grounds cited were adultery, cruelty and desertion. The report stated that the court summoned Govinda, who responded only after a notice to show cause was issued in May 2025.

Since June this year, the couple has reportedly been undergoing court-mandated counselling. Sunita has been attending hearings in person, though it remains unclear if Govinda has joined the sessions virtually.

Close friend says couple will never separate

A very close friend of Govinda dismissed speculation of a permanent split, telling, “They have been married for 38 years. Like all couples, they have their ups and downs. Tell me, which couple doesn’t have their differences?”

According to TOI, The friend went on to add: “Yes, they (Govinda-Sunita) have their fights. Yes, violent fights. I have been a first-hand witness to some of them. But they will never separate permanently. After fights, Govinda shifts to his other bungalow and returns when things cool down.”

Insisting that Sunita is central to the actor’s life, the friend said, “Govinda would never leave Sunita. He will be finished without her. She anchors him, controls his moods. Without her, he will be lost. Even if matters have gone to court—and I am not saying they have—the couple will sort out their differences, as they always do.”

Lawyer denies case

According to NDTV, Govinda’s lawyer, Lalit Bindra, also denied that there is an ongoing divorce battle. He said, “Koi case nahi sab settle ho raha hai ye sab log purani cheezen utha ke daal rahe hain” (“There is no case, everything is being settled, people are just bringing up old matters”).

A source close to the family added, “Abhi Ganesh Chaturthi aayega, aapko sab saath mein nazar aayenge, aap ghar aaiyega” (“This Ganesh Chaturthi, you will see everyone together, you should come home”).

Public appearances fuel speculation

The renewed buzz comes after Govinda was spotted at the airport on Friday evening, where he appeared calm despite being surrounded by paparazzi. The actor blew kisses to the cameras as he walked past them.

Back in February, when separation rumours had first circulated, Sunita strongly dismissed them, telling reporters, “Humko, mujhe aur Govinda ko is duniya mein agar koi alag kar de, kisi ka maai ka laal toh saamne aa jaye.” (“If anyone in this world dares to separate me and Govinda, let them come forward.”)

More recently, Sunita also addressed the divorce chatter in her YouTube vlog, saying that someone had even tried to break into her home. 

Rumours of discord in the couple’s nearly four-decade-long marriage have surfaced several times over the years. Despite reports of heated fights, close friends and family insist that the pair always reconcile.
