Prime Video's ‘God of War’ has recast Kratos after Ryan Hurst suffered a torn bicep while filming.

Amazon Prime Video's live-action adaptation of ‘God of War’ has suffered a major setback after lead actor Ryan Hurst was injured while filming, forcing production to pause and prompting the series to recast its central role.
Hurst, who had been cast as Kratos in the high-profile adaptation of the PlayStation video game franchise, reportedly sustained a torn bicep while performing a stunt on set in Vancouver in late June. The injury required surgery and is expected to keep the actor away from filming for several months, making it impossible for production to continue on its original schedule.
With the lengthy recovery clashing with the show's filming plans, the studios behind the series, Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, have decided to replace Hurst in the lead role rather than delay production indefinitely.
Why the role of Kratos is being recast
According to multiple reports, producers initially hoped Hurst would be fit enough to resume filming by mid-August. However, following surgery, it became clear that his rehabilitation would take significantly longer than anticipated.
A complete recovery from a serious bicep injury can take several months, particularly for a physically demanding role such as Kratos. With the series built around large-scale action sequences and intense stunt work, waiting for Hurst's return was reportedly no longer considered a practical option.
Production remains on hold
Filming on ‘God of War’ was halted immediately after Hurst's injury and remains on hiatus.
The fantasy drama, overseen by writer and showrunner Ronald D Moore, began shooting in Vancouver earlier this year under a two-season order, with both instalments planned to film back-to-back.
Reports suggest four episodes had already been completed before production stopped. Those episodes are now expected to be reshot once a new actor is cast as Kratos.
Preparations are reportedly expected to resume in mid-August ahead of a planned production restart in October, although Prime Video has not officially confirmed a revised filming schedule.
Why the production couldn't simply wait
One of the biggest challenges facing the production is the presence of child actor Callum Vinson, who portrays Kratos' son, Atreus.
Because children can visibly age over extended production breaks, delaying filming until Hurst fully recovered would have created continuity issues. Industry reports suggest this was a significant factor behind the decision to recast the lead instead of postponing the series until 2027 or later.
Ryan Hurst intense training for Kratos
Hurst had reportedly spent months preparing for the physically demanding role, undergoing an intensive transformation that included gaining around 40 pounds of muscle before filming began.
His injury comes after completing months of training and several weeks of production, making the recasting an unfortunate end to what had been one of the actor's most ambitious television roles.
The timing is especially bittersweet for Hurst, who also appears in Christopher Nolan's ‘The Odyssey’, which arrived in cinemas this week.
What is ‘God of War’ about?
Inspired by Sony's acclaimed PlayStation franchise, ‘God of War’ follows Kratos and his son Atreus as they embark on a perilous journey to fulfil the final wish of Kratos' late wife, Faye, by scattering her ashes.
Along the way, father and son confront gods, monsters and mythical creatures while navigating their evolving relationship. As Kratos struggles to leave behind his violent past, Atreus challenges his father to embrace compassion and humanity.
Who's in the cast?
Alongside Callum Vinson as Atreus, the series features Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri and Danny Woodburn as Brok.
The cast also includes Sonya Walger as Freya, Louis Cunningham as Modi and Island Austin as Thrud.
Lead actor recasts after filming has begun remain uncommon in television, particularly for productions of this scale.
Rather than suspend filming for an extended period while Hurst recovers, the studios have opted to move forward with a new Kratos, allowing the ambitious fantasy adaptation to remain on track despite losing its original star.
