Guruvayur Kesavan
This 1977 Malayalam movie, directed by Bharathan and produced by M O Joseph, stars Jayabharathi, Adoor Bhasi, M G Soman, and Sukumari. The movie tells the story of Gajarajan Guruvayur Kesavan, an elephant brought into the Guruvayoor Temple who wins the hearts of the people due to its lifelong service to the deity. The film went on to become one of the most iconic movies and did well at the box office. The movie transports you to a bygone era, offering a glimpse of the renowned temple and its environs.
Nandanam
Nandanam is a 2002 romantic film written, co-produced, and directed by Ranjith. The film stars Prithviraj Sukumaran, Kaviyoor Ponnamma, Revathi, Navya Nair, and several others in pivotal roles. The film won four Kerala State Film Awards and two Filmfare Awards South. This movie also marked the debut of Prithviraj Sukumaran in the film industry.
In the movie, the temple and its deity play a central role in the protogonit's life. The iconic climax scene from the movie, featuring the young Navya Nair and Prithviraj, was shot at the temple premises. It is one of the most memorable scenes shot on the temple premises.
Nakhakshathangal
The 1986 movie, directed by Hariharan and written by M. T. Vasudevan Nair, stars Monisha, Vineeth, and Saleema. The film was noted for its exceptional songs. Nakhakshathangal was Monisha’s film debut, in which she won the National Film Award for Best Actress. It was remade in Tamil as ‘Pookkal Vidum Thudhu’ in 1987, with Monisha reprising her role. The first quarter of the movie is shot at Guruvayur temple, showing the daily rituals at the temple and its festivities.
Sree Guruvayoorappan
Directed by S. Ramanathan, this 1964 movie tells the story of a priest who follows Guruvayoorappan's wishes regarding an idol. The deity in the Guruvayoor Temple comes to the aid of his devotees and grants their wishes. The movie also explores the myths behind the Sreekrishna Temple at Guruvayoor. It was produced by K.S. Ganapathy.
