Mohanlal reacts to winning the Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2023, calling it a surreal and unexpected honour.

Chennai: Soon after the Government of India announced that Mohanlal has been selected for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2023, the actor shared his heartfelt reaction.
Calling it one of the most unforgettable moments of his career, Mohanlal said, “Extremely happy. Thank you all for all the love. It’s a surreal moment. I never expected it.”
Mohanlal also expressed pride at being chosen for the honour. He said the recognition is not just for him personally, but is a tribute to Malayalam cinema, everyone working in it, the Malayalam language and Kerala as a whole.
He also thanked the jury that selected him and the Government of India for conferring such a prestigious award. He added that he dedicates the award to his audiences, family, the film fraternity and everyone who loves him. He further said he shares this joy with the directors and colleagues who have contributed to shaping him as an actor.
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest film honour, wil now be conferred upon the beloved Malayalam star Mohanlal, recognising his comprehensive contribution to Indian cinema. He has been selected for the 2023 award, and the announcement noted that his cinematic journey has inspired generations.
The award will be presented at the 71st National Film Awards ceremony on 23 September 2025. Last year, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award was presented to Bollywood actor Mithun Chakraborty. In Malayalam cinema, director Adoor Gopalakrishnan was the first recipient, having been honoured in 2004. The award was instituted by the Central Government in 1969 in memory of Dadasaheb Phalke, the director of India’s first full-length feature film, Raja Harishchandra.
