The 2024 Emmys were full of excitement, with FX’s hit show ‘The Bear’ making a huge splash, and Netflix's ‘Baby Reindeer’ surprising everyone with major wins.
‘The Bear’ scores multiple wins
Jeremy Allen White, the star of ‘The Bear’, won Best Actor in a Comedy for the second year in a row. His co-star, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, also repeated his win for Best Supporting Actor. In a surprise moment, Liza Colón-Zayas took home Best Supporting Actress, becoming the first Latina to ever win this award.
Colón-Zayas, clearly emotional, said, “How could I have thought it would be possible to be in the presence of Meryl Streep and Carol Burnett?” She also sent a heartfelt message to Latinas everywhere, encouraging them to “keep believing and vote.”
‘Baby Reindeer’ shines in limited series
Netflix’s 'Baby Reindeer' won big in the limited series category. Richard Gadd, the show’s creator and star, won Best Actor and Best Writing for the series. Jessica Gunning, who plays Gadd’s tormentor, also took home Best Supporting Actress.
‘Baby Reindeer’ is based on Gadd’s one-man stage show, where he shares his personal story of being sexually abused. Through tears, Gadd said, “Ten years ago, I never thought I could get my life together. Here I am, a decade later, picking up one of the biggest writing awards in television.”
More wins for ‘The Bear’
The Bear’s creator, Christopher Storer, also earned his second Emmy for Best Director. Jamie Lee Curtis and Jon Bernthal won guest acting awards at the Creative Arts Emmys for their roles in the show.
‘The Bear’, which tells the story of a chef trying to turn a family sandwich shop into a high-end restaurant, won six Emmys overall. The father-son duo of Eugene and Dan Levy, who hosted the event, poked fun at ‘The Bear’ being in the comedy category, with Eugene joking, “In honor of ‘The Bear’, we will be making no jokes.”
Other highlights
Jean Smart won Best Actress in a Comedy for her role in ‘Hacks’, marking her third win for the series and her sixth Emmy overall. She beat The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri, who moved up to the lead actress category this year.
FX’s ‘Shogun’, a favourite coming into the night with 14 wins already, had a quieter evening. The show managed just one win for directing. Billy Crudup from ‘The Morning Show’ took home Best Supporting Actor, beating Shogun’s Tadanobu Asano.
Meanwhile, The Crown’s Elizabeth Debicki won Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Princess Diana. “Playing this part has been a gift,” she said during her acceptance speech.
In a surprise turn, Lamorne Morris won Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series for ‘Fargo’, beating out Robert Downey Jr., who had been expected to win for ‘The Sympathizer’.
A night of nostalgia
The show featured plenty of nostalgic moments, with award presenters including sitcom dads like George Lopez, Damon Wayans, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and TV moms like Meredith Baxter, Connie Britton, and Susan Kelechi Watson.
