Bollywood actor Vicky Kaushal's upcoming historical drama 'Chhaava', based on the life of Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, has sparked controversy ahead of its February 14 release. The film has drawn criticism from historians, Maratha outfits, and public figures who allege inaccuracies and inappropriate portrayals of the revered historical figure.

Chhaava is a period drama that portrays the legendary story of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, played by Vicky Kaushal. The film is set to depict the courageous Maratha ruler's legendary reign, beginning with his coronation in 1681.

Objections to a Dance Sequence

At the centre of the controversy is a dance sequence featured in the film's trailer, where Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna, portraying Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Maharani Yesubai, are shown dancing with the lezim, a traditional musical instrument associated with Maharashtra's cultural heritage. Critics argue that this depiction undermines the dignity of Sambhaji Maharaj's legacy.

Former Rajya Sabha MP Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati, a descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, has called for the filmmakers to consult historians before releasing the movie to ensure historical accuracy. "While the lezim is an important part of our cultural heritage, it is necessary to discuss whether taking such cinematic liberties aligns with the dignity and historical portrayal of Sambhaji Maharaj," he said. Sambhajiraje emphasized the need for respectful and accurate depictions of historical figures and criticized the filmmakers for not engaging with historians despite being approached.

Maratha organizations have held protests against the film, including at Pune’s historic Lal Mahal, demanding that the movie be screened by experts before its release. Protesters warned that failure to address inaccuracies would lead to the film being blocked from screening in Maharashtra.

Maharashtra Minister Uday Samant also weighed in on the matter, echoing the demand for a pre-release screening for experts. "It is a matter of joy that a Hindi film is being made on Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. However, our position is that this film should not be released without first showing it to experts and knowledgeable people," Samant stated. He added that any content harming the honour of Sambhaji Maharaj would not be tolerated.

"Chhaava" marks Kaushal's second collaboration with Utekar after 2023's family drama movie "Zara Hatke Zara Bachke".

Kaushal said he was initially "scared" about portraying such a legendary character but Utekar had complete faith in him.

"There are certain characters that, when you get the opportunity to play them, you feel scared, wondering if you'll be able to do justice to them. That fear comes from knowing how deeply sentiments and faith are attached to such roles," he said.

"More than living that life, understanding the culture, history and values was the biggest earning from the film and that's something I will never forget," he added.

Vijian, the producer behind films such as the "Stree" franchise, "Badlapur," "Munjya" and "Hindi Medium," assured the audience that the film will do justice to Sambhaji Maharaj's legacy.

"It's my 20th year (in the film industry). It is the hard work of all these years that we are in the position to make such a film," he said.
