Dubbing artist Bhagyalakshmi on Friday, criticised the sentencing in the actress assault case, saying the court’s decision failed to take the survivor into account. She said the judgment effectively felt like “a life sentence for the survivor”.

On Monday, the Ernakulam Principal Sessions Judge Honey M Varghese sentenced six accused, including Pulsar Suni to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹50,000.

Bhagyalakshmi said the court considered the age and family background of the convicts but did not factor in the survivor’s “life or age”.

“What kind of injustice is this? What does this even mean? They look at his age, his life, his mother… The survivor has no mother, no life, no age? This is injustice. It is unbearable,” she said.

Earlier, actor Parvathy Thiruvothu had also reacted on social media, saying the convicts had received “minimum sentence and maximum consideration”. She wrote that women have “no country to live” and said she has come to accept that reality.

On Monday, the court found Pulsar Suni, Martin Antony, B. Manikandan, VP Vijesh, H Salim (Vadival Salim) and Pradeep guilty. Charges proven against them include gang rape.

In the case related to recording the assault and capturing defamatory visuals, the court had acquitted actor Dileep and three others. The verdict comes eight years after the incident.

The assault took place on 17 February 2017, when the actress was travelling from Thrissur to Ernakulam for a shoot. According to the prosecution, she was abducted on a quotation basis and defamatory footage was recorded.
