Chennai: A death threat was issued against actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) leader Kamal Haasan following his recent remarks criticising Sanatana Dharma, according to media reports.

The threat was allegedly made by television actor Ravichandran, who, as per reports, stated that Kamal Haasan’s "throat should be slit" for his comments made at a recent public event.

In response, office-bearers of Makkal Needhi Maiam filed a complaint with the Chennai Police Commissioner, requesting an investigation into the incident and appropriate legal action.

Remarks made at Agaram Foundation event

Kamal Haasan made some remarks during the 15th anniversary celebrations of Agaram Foundation, a non-profit organisation led by actor Suriya. In his speech, Kamal stated that "only education can break the chains of autocracy and Sanatana Dharma", and urged young people to refrain from taking up any weapon other than knowledge.

These comments were interpreted by Ravichandran and others as being derogatory towards Sanatana Dharma.

BJP leader calls for boycott of Kamal’s films

Following the controversy, Tamil Nadu BJP state secretary Amar Prasad Reddy called for a boycott of Kamal Haasan’s films, urging the public not to watch either in cinemas or on OTT platforms, stating that the actor must be "taught a lesson" for allegedly insulting Sanatana Dharma.

As of now, no official statement has been issued by Kamal Haasan regarding the incident.
