Basil Joseph, celebrated Malayalam director and actor, has built a career marked by hits like Kunjiramayanam and Minnal Murali. However, it is his off-screen camaraderie with actor Nazriya that has recently caught attention. The two stars have finally shared screen space in Sookshmadarshini, marking their first collaboration.
In a candid conversation with Mathrubhumi, Basil shared that their relationship off-screen was far from the usual, with the two often exchanging playful insults and teasing one another. Despite their close friendship, he emphasised that their on-screen chemistry in Sookshmadarshini was entirely different. "Our antics off-screen are not what you see in the film," Basil said, acknowledging that they play very different characters.

Basil and Nazriya had only interacted through Instagram and mutual friends until their paths crossed on the set of Sookshmadarshini. "I met Nazriya for the first time on the set of Sookshmadarshini," Basil recalled. "Until then, we had only communicated through messages." Basil said their mutual friends, including Syam Pushkaran, Dileesh Pothan, and Sushin Shyam, encouraged them to collaborate.
While their bond is rooted in respect, Basil revealed that their time on set was filled with playful banter. “Even while working together, we would tease each other,” said Basil. Their interactions were not without humour. "I would say, ‘I will go sleep and come back’ just to get under her skin," he added, highlighting the friendly banter that made their time together enjoyable.
Basil also shared that working with Nazriya in Sookshmadarshini felt natural. “It’s the most comfortable I have felt working with a co-actor," he said. Their deep mutual respect and easy-going relationship made the work dynamic effortless. "Going to the set did not feel like ‘work’ during the shooting of ‘Sookshmadarshini.’ I went to sets everyday thinking of ways to prank her and defend against her attacks," he joked, referring to their constant banter.
