A fresh rumour surrounding ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has sparked debate among Marvel fans, claiming two of the franchise's most anticipated returning heroes could have only a fleeting presence in the upcoming blockbuster.

According to X handle @MyTimeToShineH, Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine are expected to appear for only a few minutes before being killed during the film's opening sequence. While the report remains unconfirmed by Marvel Studios, it has fuelled speculation about the direction of the Russo Brothers' next ensemble epic.

Rumoured opening sets high stakes

The latest claim suggests both characters receive just a brief appearance before their apparent deaths.

According to @MyTimeToShineH, Spider-Man and Wolverine will have only "3 minutes of screen time before being killed in Avengers: Doomsday."

The rumoured sequence is said to unfold during an early confrontation involving Maguire's Spider-Man and a team of X-Men, immediately establishing the film's stakes. Previous reports have also hinted that the opening act centres on a multiversal conflict in which different realities collide, forcing heroes into direct conflict.

X-Men battle and multiverse consequences

Several reports circulating online suggest the X-Men could play a morally complex role in the story, with the mutants allegedly attempting to destroy alternate realities in an effort to save their own universe.

The rumoured battle is also expected to feature a powerful magnetic attack that devastates part of the eastern United States, escalating the conflict before the story shifts towards its larger multiversal narrative.

If the reports prove accurate, both Spider-Man and Wolverine would fall during this opening clash, although many fans believe those deaths would not be permanent.

Fans expect both heroes to return

Despite the reported early exits, speculation continues that neither character will remain dead for long.

Industry observers believe the film's multiverse storyline leaves room for both heroes to return before the final act. Reports suggest characters killed during the opening battle could later be resurrected at a location central to the film's plot, meaning their apparent deaths may simply serve as a dramatic turning point rather than a permanent farewell.

The rumour has nevertheless disappointed some fans, many of whom hoped Maguire and Jackman would play larger roles throughout the film.

Scheduling and production may have shaped the roles

The reported limited appearances have also prompted discussion about practical filmmaking considerations.

Large ensemble productions often have to balance actor availability, filming schedules and production costs. If key cast members were available only for a limited period, the filmmakers may have opted to concentrate their scenes into a shorter but pivotal sequence without ruling out later appearances.

There is also continued speculation that Marvel plans to reunite all three live-action Spider-Man actors in a future instalment, potentially giving Maguire a more substantial role beyond ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. No similar plans involving Jackman's Wolverine have been confirmed.

Lewis Pullman backs the Russo Brothers' approach

While rumours continue to circulate about screen time, actor Lewis Pullman recently defended directors Joe and Anthony Russo's handling of the film's enormous cast.

"It's going back to the serum of the human archetypes that our art is built off of. Every character has their moment that builds the dimensions of them. The Russo brothers did that so well," he said.

Pullman added that the directors wanted every member of the ensemble to have meaningful moments rather than simply appearing in the background.

"They do not want anyone just sitting in the background. They really took to heart the responsibility of having some of the best actors in the world all together. There are a lot of really exciting pair-ups that happen. A lot of fans will be really excited. It's so fun to dream about. What if A and B would work together? You get to see a lot of those fantasies come into fruition," he explained.

Star-studded cast and release date

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ features one of Marvel Studios' biggest ensembles to date, with returning stars including Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Tom Hiddleston, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd and Robert Downey Jr.

The film also welcomes performers from Fantastic Four and the X-Men franchise, including Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Joseph Quinn, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn and Alan Cumming, among many others.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo from a screenplay by Stephen McFeely, the film is produced by Kevin Feige alongside Louis D'Esposito and Jonathan Schwartz.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on December 18, serving as the first chapter in a two-part conclusion to Marvel's latest multiverse saga.
