Renowned Tamil filmmaker C Prem Kumar, currently basking in the success of his latest release Meiyazhagan, starring Arvind Swamy and Karthi, has revealed exciting news for cinephiles. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, the director shared that he is in the advanced stages of scripting a sequel to his much-loved 2018 directorial debut, 96. The original film, starring Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha Krishnan, remains a revered modern-day classic.
Speaking about the sequel, Prem Kumar expressed enthusiasm about revisiting the beloved characters of Ram and Jaanu, whose bittersweet love story struck a chord with audiences.
During the interview, Anupama Chopra, the host, shared her emotional connection to the original film, admitting to sleepless nights spent wondering why Ram and Jaanu couldn’t end up together. She even recalled asking Trisha directly about the characters’ separation. Hearing of the sequel, Chopra couldn’t contain her excitement.
Prem Kumar also shared a touching memory from 96’s release. One day, an elderly woman recognised him, called him over, and playfully slapped him for leaving Ram and Jaanu separated. Her actions, though light-hearted, reflected the emotional impact of the film. The director added that the woman soon kissed his cheek, showing her love for the movie and its creator.
Released in 2018, 96 featured Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha in the lead roles, with newcomers Gouri G Kishan and Adithya Bhaskar portraying their younger selves. The plot centres on a reunion of the 1996 batch of a school, 22 years after graduation. This gathering becomes a platform for Ram and Jaanu, former lovers, to confront their unresolved past.
96 was both a critical and commercial success, with its universal themes of lost love and nostalgia resonating across generations. It remains a cherished film, hailed as one of Tamil cinema’s most poignant love stories.
With the sequel now in the works, fans eagerly await another chapter in this unforgettable tale.
