Director C Prem Kumar, the creative mind behind the hit film 96, has made a bold declaration about the long-discussed sequel: he will only move forward with 96 Part 2 if the original star cast, including Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha, return. Despite receiving glowing praise for the script, Prem Kumar insists that the integrity of the original film—both in story and casting—must be preserved. For him, this is not just a preference but a "stubborn decision" crucial to staying true to the soul of 96, he explained in a recent interview with Baradwaj Rangan.

A sequel that surpasses the original

Prem Kumar shared that the script for the sequel, which continues the story a decade after the events of the first film, has already been completed. In fact, he believes the new script is "far better than 96." After overcoming his initial apprehensions about sequels often failing to live up to their predecessors, Prem Kumar proudly states that writing 96 Part 2 has been a rewarding experience. "This is my best writing so far," he says, clearly satisfied with the direction the sequel is taking.

The script has been met with rave reviews from his team, with many declaring it superior to the original. Even his busy producer, after reading the script, presented Prem Kumar with a gold chain worth 7 lakhs, expressing his joy over the project. "It’s the first time a script alone has made me this happy," Prem Kumar recalled, underscoring the immense support the story has garnered.

The importance of the Original cast

Despite the glowing script, 96 Part 2 has yet to begin production. Prem Kumar cites scheduling conflicts, the complexity of filming in locations like Singapore, and a high budget as contributing factors to the delay. But the biggest hurdle, according to him, is the necessity of the original cast’s involvement.

When asked if he could consider a different cast should Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha be unavailable, Prem Kumar made his position clear: "I will not make 96 Part 2 with anyone else. It has to be them." He views his decision as essential for staying true to the storytelling, noting that the performances of Sethupathi and Trisha were instrumental in creating the deep emotional connection that audiences felt with the characters.

Prem Kumar’s commitment to the original actors extends beyond the lead roles. "I’m grateful to every actor who contributed to 96, not just Vijay and Trisha. Even those in smaller roles gave life to the characters, and that’s what made the film so real to the audience," he reflected.

For the director, 96 was more than just a film—it was a story about love, memory, and the passage of time, which could only be authentically told by the same cast who had so brilliantly embodied those themes.

Though Prem Kumar is prepared for the possibility that the sequel may never come to fruition, he remains committed to waiting for the right moment and the right cast. "If the film happens, it will be with the original cast, or it won’t happen at all," he said. For now, while he continues to explore other creative ventures—like a thriller script—Prem Kumar has kept 96 Part 2 on hold, ready for when the stars align.
